the dreaded "fiscal cliff." if they don't reach a deal by the end of the year, tax hikes and across the board budget cuts will automatically kick in. susan mcginnis has more on today's efforts to get democrats and republicans a little closer together. >>> reporter: president obama will begin a media blitz this week highlighting his efforts to steer clear of the "fiscal cliff." he will first meet with small business owners at the white house today. at the other end of pennsylvania avenue, fellow democrat senator dick durbin will give what's being called a major speech laying out a case for a bipartisan deal. durbin's a member of the senate's gang of 8, four democrats and four republicans who have collaborated on ways to reduce the nation's debt for 2 1/2 year. democratic senator mark warner is also in the gang and says democrats are willing to put entitlements like medicaid and medicare on the negotiating table. >> the math just doesn't work anymore not because the programs are bad but because thank goodness we're living a lot longer. >> reporter
